Why New England?

No matter where I have lived or traveled, my spirit returns to the colors, smells, seasons, and scenery of New England.

Part of being brought up there is to acquire a love of the outdoors, and an appreciation for small towns that retain their charm through many decades. Mountains are bare-topped granite, affording wonderful panoramic views.   Beaches are small, sandy crescents that are dramatically offset by cliffs and crashing waves, sometimes  containing wonderful pools that are microcosms of plants and sea creatures. Many people do not know about the wilderness in New England-wonderful forests where you can hike all day or several days without meeting other people.   And the lakes are sparkling, clear, sandy-bottomed natural lakes...

So here are some watercolor paintings of the New England I love...

OVERLOOKING SCARBOROUGH MARSH

Scarborough Marsh seems such a quiet, secret area, but it is just of one of the busiest parts of Route 1 in southern Maine. We have canoed there several times, letting the tide pull us out to where the river meets the sea, then turning with the tide to paddle back to where we started. It is a lazy, easy paddle and you have plenty of time to observe the bird activity along the muddy shore.

LATE GARDEN AT THE FELLS

The Fells, located in Newbury, New Hampshire, is one of New England's fines examples of an early 20th century summer home and gardens. It was the summer estate of diplomat John M. Hay. The gardens were designed by the family, and are slowly being reclaimed in the spirit of the original design by experienced horticulturalists, and the beautiful house is open for tours.

MAKING WAVES
In the fall, loons seem to gather to socialize before they migrate from the lakes to the open ocean for the winter. We were staying at a camp on Rangeley Lake one Labor Day when we were awakened by a lot of chatter and splashing.

OFF SEASON

Block Island is very popular in the summer, but if you happen to go there early in the season, the quiet porches evoke the remote feeling of being on an island even more than during the summer rush.
