Why New England?
No matter where I have lived or traveled, my spirit returns to the colors, smells, seasons, and scenery of New England.
Part of being brought up here is to acquire a love of the outdoors, and an appreciation for small towns that retain their charm through many decades. Our mountains are not the 14,000 foot high Rockies, but they are often bare-topped granite, affording wonderful panoramic views when you reach the top. We have some gentle beaches as they do in the South, but our sandy crescents are dramatically offset by cliffs and crashing waves, intermingled with wonderful pools that are microcosms of plants and sea creatures. And many people do not know that we have wilderness in New England-wonderful forests where you can hike all day or several days without meeting other people. Add the lakes-not murky, man-made bodies of water or dried-up pits, but sparkling, clear, sandy-bottomed natural lakes-well, I guess you get the idea. We have lived on the edge of the ocean, in foggy Cutler, Maine-about as far east as you can go in our country. Now we live on the edge of the woods, where native plants and animals invade our yard. I constantly find things I would love to paint. You will see a few of them here. It is my promise that there will be more-many more.
OVERLOOKING SCARBOROUGH MARSH
Scarborough Marsh seems such a quiet, secret area, but it is just of one of the busiest parts of Route 1 in southern Maine. We have canoed there several times, letting the tide pull us out to where the river meets the sea, then turning with the tide to paddle back to where we started. It is a lazy, easy paddle and you have plenty of time to observe the bird activity along the muddy shore.
