Commission fine art: An opportunity to
commission a custom watercolor painting that will be cherished
Is there a scene that you want to remember
always--perhaps a house or a familiar landscape? Or, maybe you want to
give a painting that will be cherished forever to someone who is
getting married, moving, or retiring.
If you like my style, I will work with you to develop your concept into
a custom watercolor. I like to begin the process by taking photos of
the location or building you would like represented, but I have worked
from several photos provided by the client, or just a word picture of
what the customer wants in the painting.
Usually, I can schedule and complete a painting in 2 months, if I do
not have other commissions in the works.
Custom fine art pricing varies according to the size of the painting
and the time it takes to paint it, but I can give you a price range
based on size so you will know what to expect. I will ask for a deposit
that will commit you to this project as much as I will be committed.
Previous clients have told me that I am particularly sensitive to their
ideas and like the way I have interpreted them in watercolor. Here are
some stories of past commissions that have been very successful:

TIMELESS
Chris came to my booth at the Portland Flower Show and looked very
closely at the paintings I had displayed. He lives on an old Maine farm
that he has landscaped with beautiful water gardens. His mother had
maintained an antique shop in the shed and barn for many years, but was
now retired and living in the Boston area. He wanted someone to paint
the farm with the barn door open, exposing the lovely antiques that she
had collected. He wanted to give the painting to his parents so that
they would remember their beautiful old farm whenever they looked at
it.
We waited until mid-summer, when the gardens were really blooming, and
I took many pictures of the house and the gardens in different light
and time of day. Even as I took the pictures, the concept of
timelessness was forming in my mind...
LOOKING TO THE HORIZON

Tara emailed me from Portland, Oregon. She had
visited New Hampshire the past summer to be maid-of-honor in the
wedding of a friend, and had later happened on my booth at the White
Mountain Art Festival in Jackson. It was her friends first anniversary,
and she wanted to give her a keepsake of her wedding, which had been
held at the Castle in the Clouds in Meredith, New Hampshire.
She sent me many photographs of the courtyard with
the wonderful view of Lake Winnepesaukee, but I was not satisfied that
I had a good feeling for the environment from the pictures.
So, my husband and I made the trip and took a tour
of the Castle to hear the wonderful story of how it was built. We could
feel the relationship of the building with the surrounding environment.
When I saw the terrace, I thought that the fountain with its sculpture
of two youngsters overlooking the wide landscape below them might be
the perfect choice of subject for the painting. It seemed to be
symbolic of two people starting their lives together, wondering what
the far horizons had in store for them.
Tara loved this concept, and so that is how this
watercolor was painted.
THE "TRILOGY OF DREAMS"
Margaret writes:
"I asked JoAnn to create a watercolor painting for above my bed. I
wanted a scene of a house with surrounding landscapes that were
representative of my former homes. She created"The Picked Fence."
The fence and flowers were reminiscent of my New Jersey home, the
mountains were that of New Hampshire, and the house was my farm in
Vermont. She beautifully created the scene, adding a gazebo-something
that I have always wanted.
My bed is encompassed by three walls. So we then decided to continue
the theme. On my wall, the painting is of the gazebo and a small pond
with two boats I can easily imagine myself resting in that tranquil
place...
My husband loves covered bridges, so on his wall Joann created a
beautiful bridge with water and flowers.
As a result of JoAnn's talent and understanding of what I wanted, we
can take the journey over the bridge to our home!
Our bedroom now is a beautiful and peaceful place where we can rest our
heads and dream.
EASTMAN COVERED BRIDGE
There are many second home owners in the community where I live. They
come up from Massachusetts or Rhode Island whenever they get a break,
to enjoy kayaking on the lake, hiking, skiing, or many other seasonal
activities that are closer to nature than their city-living allows.
A young family was looking for a large photograph of our covered
bridge, and the owner of the Grantham Stonewall Gallery steered them my
way. They loved the view I suggested because it looks like your are
observing the bridge from a kayak. And they had kayaked in that area
many times.
Now they have this painting over their mantle in their city home.
A BIRTHDAY PRESENT
A retired couple needed a special gift for his
sister on her 90th birthday. She lived in Florida, in a place where she
had a wonderful view of a pond that was visited by many animals and
birds. They knew that one of her favorite pastimes was watching the
wildlife. Sometimes (not often) roseate spoonbills would visit the
pond, and she was especially happy because they are rarely seen.
She knew she would need to move from her house to
quarters where she could get more immediate care, and they wanted her
to have something that would remind her of the pond view that she had
enjoyed for many years. They had only one picture of her view, and it
did not include the roseate spoonbills or an alligator that frequently
hung out there, so I painted them in!
