This gallery features my national park art

My husband and I are very fortunate in that we are in a position to travel several months each year. Using the privilege, we have explored all of the states and much of Canada in search of unspoiled landscapes.

We have a special love for two of the parks—Great Sand Dunes National Park near Alamosa, Colorado, and Acadia National Park in downeast Maine—where we have been volunteers in their Visitors’ Centers, at their campgrounds, their educational programs, and their Artist-in-Residence programs. It is a great experience to live in these special places, and focus in depth on the environment, animals, birds, flowers, hiking trails, and water resources.

MEDANO CREEK FLOWS IN THE SPRING
Medano Creek in Great Sand Dunes National Park sometimes flows so fast in the spring that it creates unique waves.  People from all over Colorado gather to to enjoy the action.  The mountain snow slowly melts into the arroyos, which carry the runoff to the creek.

REMAINS OF THE WELLINGTON CABIN
There was once a pioneer settlement within the boundaries of Great Sand Dunes National Park.  You can take a short hike to see the remains of the last settler's cabin and his extensive irrigation canals.  Some of the highest mountain peaks in Colorado are in the background.

WINTER ATOP CADILLAC MOUNTAIN
The view from the bare granite rocks at the top of Cadillac Mountain is fantastic every time of year, but not many people get to see it in the frosty winter mode.

ROAD TO SEAWALL
Seawall is on the "quie side" of Mt. Desert Island.  The road is right on the edge of the rolling stone beach and sometimes gets washed over in storms.  Perhaps the swamp on the right becomes brackish when this happens...

GOLD AND GRANITE
On the road to Schoodic Point one fall, I found this beautiful seascape of granite ledges framed by bright yellow goldenrod.

PATHWAY THROUGH THE BIRCHES
New England birches line a pathway at St. Gaudens National Monument in New Hampshire.  The dapple of the leaves and the dark blue shadows attracted me to this scene.

SENTINEL
The unique shape of the Joshua tree in the foreground and  the background grove of Joshuas seem to fit comfortably with the white desert sand and bare rock mountains.  The place was silent and  barren until a crow flew in and assumed his lookout position.

THE WINDOW AT BIG BEND
Here is another place that attracted me because it seems barren,  but we dscovered that it is teeming with life.  The buzzards flew overhead constantly, no doubt looking for creatures that had perished in the dry, hot conditions of this national park.  Layers of eroded mountains make this area fascinating.

YOSEMITE FROM THE VALLEY
It was fall that we visited Yosemite, just before they closed Tuolemne Pass for the winter.  So, although this is the site where Yosemite Falls drops down in the spring, all you see is the path of the falls on the stone (left outcropping) in the dry season.  Still, it was a lovely day to sit in by the river in the valley and paint the carved erosion lines of the surrounding cliffs.

STROLLING THROUGH A DAPPLED FOREST
We found this springtime scene on a hike in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina.  The leaves were just popping out, and the woods were alive with the delicate colors of early spring.
